Communication

The main exchanges in Taiwan are in Traditional Mandarin. However, the further away you get from big cities, the more you get to know Taiwanese. Local language most commonly used by elders.

Although these two languages are the most common here, it should be noted that Taiwan is also home to aborigines. There are several groups of aborigines and each of them has its own language. On the other hand, now they only represent 3% of the total population.

In big cities, there are many infrastructures adapted in English. This makes life much easier when we don’t know enough Chinese 🙏 Usually, people living in large cities are more likely to be proficient in English, especially young people. You will have the opportunity to communicate in English on a regular basis if you are in a city like Taipei. To give an example, in my previous job (catering worker) :

  • Team of 7 people

  • Age : 18-35 years old

  • 5 on 7 able to communicate in English

This is a very small sample, but really, they are much more comfortable with English than we are in France ! 😂

About remote communication, many use Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, but the main instant communication tool here is "Line". An application that you can already download since it will be part of your daily life ! Just get used to it from now on.
